performance during my artist residence in the Arctic Circle in May 2025

Set against a pristine yet fragile backdrop of the arctic terrain, the performance reflects on our relentless patterns of consumption: of resources, relationships, places and feelings. Each match is repetitively struck against a rough surface of the matchbox, one after another, in a continuous loop, almost manically.

It mirrors the paradox of modern existence: a never-ending pipeline of extraction we live inside, trapped in cycle of taking and using, fuelled by immediate gratification and dopamine-seeking reward loop. Compulsive desire, manufactured warmth, a condensed sense of connection and fulfilment — gone in seconds, leaving us perpetually reaching for the next moment of brief flame.

What are we missing in the rush to consume the moment? while focusing on the small-scale obsessions, do we lose sight of a larger picture? Is it still possible to cultivate spaces of genuine care, connection and preservation, when we are unceasingly distracted by the immediate, the consumable and the disposable?
